Dr. Grant Brenner
Dr. Grant Brenner is a board-certified psychiatrist and psychoanalyst whose work is rooted in a lifelong immersion in science, psychology, and self-exploration. His interdisciplinary path—from physics to psychology, and from surgery to psychiatry—led him to psychoanalytic training and private practice in 2002.
He serves as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health at Mount Sinai Beth Israel and is on faculty at the Manhattan Institute for Psychoanalysis, where he teaches the neurobiology of trauma. Dr. Brenner completed his psychiatry residency at Mount Sinai and holds advanced certifications in psychoanalysis, organizational psychodynamics, and trauma-related disciplines from the William Alanson White Institute and NYU.
With nearly two decades in private practice, Dr. Brenner has developed a results-driven, highly individualized approach to treatment, helping patients identify limiting patterns and achieve meaningful psychological change. He is committed to expanding conventional thinking in mental health through teaching, writing, and public engagement.
Dr. Brenner is the founder and clinical lead of Brighter NeuroTherapeutics, specializing in treatment-resistant depression using Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), and a founding partner of Mental Health Media Group. He hosts The Doorknob Comments Podcast and writes the Psychology Today blog ExperiMentations. A leader in disaster mental health, he serves on the board of Vibrant Emotional Health and created the MARCCD framework to support resilience in complex crises.
Dr. Brenner is a private practitioner who works with high-functioning individuals seeking meaningful change beyond traditional therapeutic goals. He integrates cutting-edge neuroscience, adaptive clinical methodologies, and deeply compassionate engagement to deliver transformative psychoanalytic care. His work is especially focused on individuals who have achieved external success yet find themselves encountering internal barriers to growth. Through a results-oriented and whole-person approach, Dr. Brenner helps patients move beyond stagnation and toward sustained psychological optimization.
Blending classical psychoanalytic principles with modern neuroscientific insight, Dr. Brenner designs highly personalized therapeutic protocols that directly address each patient’s unique challenges. His approach targets behavioral patterns, restores adaptive neural connectivity, and supports long-term change—allowing patients to experience measurable improvements both internally and within their relationships. The process is dynamic, collaborative, and intentionally tailored to foster clarity, resilience, and personal evolution.
Dr. Brenner’s methodologies draw from a broad range of neuroscientific and psychological frameworks, informed by his experience as a psychiatrist, therapist, educator, and entrepreneur. At its core, his work remains psychoanalytic: grounded in attentive listening, respect for the mind’s innate capacity for self-correction, and a deep understanding of developmental influences that shape identity and one’s sense of place in the world. While his approach is outcome-focused, he recognizes the essential role of time in meaningful psychological development and consistently observes that lasting change emerges when insight and perspective align.
Board-certified in psychiatry, Dr. Brenner prescribes medication judiciously and with a conservative, evidence-based philosophy. He conducts comprehensive psychological and medical evaluations to ensure that no treatable factors are overlooked and collaborates closely with other professionals when appropriate, ensuring care that is both integrated and thorough.
Drawing on a unique integration of cutting-edge neuroscience, adaptive therapeutic methodologies, and compassionate, deeply attuned engagement, Dr. Brenner offers a creative and highly personalized approach to care. His work supports patients in gaining clarity about who they truly are and in creating meaningful, lasting transformation—both within themselves and in their relationships.
